Hi Families!
Welcome to first grade for 2017-18.  I am new to Tomball ISD this year and am so excited to be here at Creekside Forest Elementary School.  I recently moved from Reno, Nevada with my husband and two children.  I have been teacher first grade for 11 years in Nevada and I am looking forward to learning all about Texas! I received my bachelors degree from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2005 and have been teaching ever since.  I truly enjoy teaching the young learners in first grade and can't wait to get started.  I look forward to a great year in first grade.

Raz-Kids update

Hi Families!
Today at computer lab, I had everyone log in to and read leveled books. I wanted to let you know that you can log in at home as well.  This is a great resource for you at home to access leveled books that are just right for your child.  I have already selected the level so you don't have to worry about that.  You can change levels, but please only go 1 level higher if you feel it is appropriate.  Remember your child should be able to read these books and answer questions about them on their own.  Also, there are three things you can do when reading the books: listen, read on your own, and answer questions.  It would be best to do all 3 steps in that order to earn the most stars and be successful.  There are many other great things to do on Raz-Kids, but in class we have only gone to "Leveled Books".  Also, when you click on the Kids Login you may have to enter the teacher's user name - you can type in civeson0 and my name will come up and it will show all the kids (by lunch number) in the class.  You have to choose your child's number, then put in TISD and their birthday for the password.  If you have any questions please let me know!
Thank you!

Star Folders

Hi Parents!
I wanted to first of all thank everyone for coming in to conference with me! I truly enjoyed learning more about your children and getting to know all of you.
I also wanted to let everyone know that I did not send home red star folders tonight. I need to add and change a couple of things this weekend.  We had a fabulous, busy Friday and I will send folders home on Monday.
Thanks for your support!

Snack/Leveled Book Letter

Hi First Grade Families -
I wanted to let you know about a couple of things happening in our class next week.  We are going to start setting out our snacks in the morning so that they are easier to get to at snack time.  So, if you want to, it may be helpful for your child to have their name on their snack, or in a Ziploc with their name. We are going to have two snack times, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Also, their snack time isn't very long, so one snack should be enough per snack time, meaning they may have two things.  Please try to make sure that your child knows which items are their snacks vs. their lunch, and have them ready to set out in the morning.  They will sit out during the day so they should be nonperishable items that can be easily eaten as they will be eating while working.  If you have any questions please let me know.
Today I am sending home a letter about sending home literacy library books for your students to read at night.  Please read, sign, and return the bottom half of this letter so I can start sending home these books soon.
Also, Monday is a student day off - enjoy your time with your family!
Thank you,
Mrs. Iveson

Hi Parents,
This is a reminder that homework has started this week.  In the back of your child's Star Folder is a reading log for parents to initial that says your child has read for 20 minutes.  Please know that your students and I discussed what is considered reading.  Your child has learned that there are 3 ways to read: read the pictures, read the words and retell a story.  They also know that having a story read to them, listening to a book being read, reading with a parent, sibling, or anyone else, taking turns reading a book, reading out loud, reading silently, etc. are ALL acceptable ways to spend the 20 minutes reading.  While I would really like for them to spend time with a real book, if you have something very valuable on an electronic device that would be great too.  We also talked about going to academic websites and that part of the 20 minutes could be spent on a website if its focus was on reading.  Reading is your child's only homework, so the only way I will be able to know that they did their homework is by the parents initial on the reading log.  Please let me know if you have any other questions about homework.
I also wanted to let everyone know that yesterday a page on Word Study was added to my website.  Your child will have their first spelling test this Friday on 10 words. 5 of them being short a words, and five of them being sight words.  The list of the words we are working on in class is available on my website under Word Study.  If you would like to spend time in the evening studying these words with your child that would be great.  We will be discussing both spelling and homework again and in more depth at Parent Orientation Night next Thursday.
Thank you and have a great night!

Hi Parents!
We had a great week back and your students have been working very hard to learn our classroom procedures and expectations.  To help us get to know each other better, I am sending home a couple of things to do this weekend.  Look for them to come home in your child's Star Folder tonight.  The first one is an "All About Me" bag.  Students will bring in a few items from home and share them with the class.  The second is a home/school connection for social studies where students will write down their address and phone number and draw a picture of their home.  We are learning about community and want students thinking about where they live in our community. Both items need to be brought back by Monday 9/11.
Thank you for your support! Have a great weekend.

Welcome Back!

I'm glad to see everyone back today! Here are a couple of updates/reminders.
1. Parent orientation will be canceled this week, we will let you know when it is rescheduled.
2. Please send in a pair of headphones for your child to use in class and the computer lab.  They will be labeled for your child and only used by your child.
3. Homework will start next week. It will be 20 minutes of reading every night and there will be a log for parents to initial.
4. Please make sure to look at your child's behavior calendar in their red Star Folder every night, and initial.
Thank you for all your continued support and I hope everyone has a great week! Let me know if you need anything.
Thank you,
Mrs. Iveson
