Hi Families!
Welcome to first grade for 2017-18.  I am new to Tomball ISD this year and am so excited to be here at Creekside Forest Elementary School.  I recently moved from Reno, Nevada with my husband and two children.  I have been teacher first grade for 11 years in Nevada and I am looking forward to learning all about Texas! I received my bachelors degree from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2005 and have been teaching ever since.  I truly enjoy teaching the young learners in first grade and can't wait to get started.  I look forward to a great year in first grade.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Katie Iveson

Week of Feb. 16

Hi Families:
Monday, Feb. 19th is a school holiday, President's Day, so there is no school.
Tuesday, the 20th is picture day.
Thank you to everyone for the sweet Valentine gifts! You are all so amazing and I really appreciate working with such awesome families! We had a great party!
Also, thank you for your support with the items we need for the hundredth day snack - the kids loved counting out 100 pieces for their trail mix snack.
Next week...
Reading, Writing, and Social Studies - In honor of President's Day, we will be studying 2 famous former presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  Then we will also be learning about our current president Donald Trump.  We will be reading many non-fiction texts and gathering facts.  We will then use those facts to write All About books on these presidents.  We will also being taking a test on the information learned about these three presidents.
For word work we will begin long vowels, starting this week with long a made with a silent e on the end.  We will only be working on this long vowel pattern, but words might include blends and digraphs.  For example: bake, snake, shape...
Math - We will be completing our unit on data and graphing.  Students will create their own survey question, survey the class and collect the data using a tally chart, then they will create a bar graph using the data.  They will use their bar graph to ask questions about the data, and then answer those questions.  We will also be taking the Unit test on Friday.
I hope you all have a great long weekend!

Go Texan Day

Parents,

On February 23rd, we will be celebrating Go Texan Day at Creekside Forest Elementary. We would love for your child to come to school dressed Western/Texan. They will be square dancing as well on that day during their specials period. Thank you for your continued support!

CFES Staff

Creekfest

Greetings, CFES families! The Creekside Forest PTO will be hosting a Silent Auction during our annual fundraiser, Creekfest. Thanks to the generosity of our students, parents and community partners, the Silent Auction has been a great success over the past several years.

Every grade level will have theme baskets featured in the auction. We are inviting each student to donate an item or items that correlate with their grade level theme. The PTO team will assemble baskets with the donated items, and auction them off during Creekfest.

While your participation in this is not required, we greatly appreciate your help in making this year’s Silent Auction a success.

We have created signup genius links  for each grade to help provide ideas for donations so the contents of our baskets are robust and balanced, and to avoid duplicate contributions. The signup will include blank slots for those of you who like to be creative! The themes and links for each grade are as follows:

KindergartenSummer Fun, Barbie, Hot Wheels and Hatchimals/LOL. Link: Kindergarten Theme Baskets

First Grade: LEGO Friends, American Girl, Shopkins and Super Heroes. Link: First Grade Theme Baskets

Second Grade: Arts & Crafts, Movie Night, Minecraft and LEGO Star Wars. Link: Second Grade Theme Baskets

Third Grade: Backyard Fun, Harry Potter, Family Game Night and STEM Toys. Link: Third Grade Theme Baskets

Fourth Grade: Electronic Games, Star Wars, Sports and SLIME! Link:  Fourth Grade Theme Baskets

Fifth Grade: Gift Cards (including restaurants, department stores, local boutiques, Amazon, Fandango, and many more!) Link:   Fifth Grade Theme Baskets

Please send your donations to school with your child by February 17th, so we have ample time to make any remaining purchases and assemble all the amazing auction baskets!

Thank you for your participation in this fun event to raise money for our school!

Sincerely,

Julie Bridenstine

Library

Hi families,
We had to change our library day this week to Wednesday. Just for this week, can you please have your child bring their books to exchange on Wednesday.
Thank you!

Week of Jan. 22nd

Hi Families!

It will be nice this week to finally have a full week back at school! On Tuesday we will enjoy a visit from the author Steve Swinburne.  He writes books on animals and nature.

Our spelling test will be on Friday and will now have 15 words.  A note will come home attached to the test explaining how the tests will be graded for the 3rd 9 weeks.

What are we learning this week?

Word Work: We will be working on reading and writing words with short i.  All of the words will also contain a blend (2 letters with sounds closely linked) or digraph (2 letters together making one sound sh, ch, th, wh, ck).

Reading: We will use nonfiction texts about Martin Luther King Jr to make predictions, make connections, think about big ideas, identify MLK's contributions to the world.

Writing: We are going to complete the procedural texts from last week and wrap up that unit.  Then we will incorporate reading and social studies with writing to work on MLK writings.

Math: We are working on Place Value skills to 120 (continuing into next week).  We will learn about the "flat" place value block, how to write numbers above 100 in expanded form, how to build numbers with place value blocks more than 1 way, how to compare numbers using the symbols, and ordering numbers.

Science: We are continuing with weather and also beginning to learn about day and night and objects in the sky.

Social Studies: We are incorporating reading, social studies and writing this week to learn about MLK.

Have a great week!
Katie
