Hi Families!
Welcome to first grade for 2017-18.  I am new to Tomball ISD this year and am so excited to be here at Creekside Forest Elementary School.  I recently moved from Reno, Nevada with my husband and two children.  I have been teacher first grade for 11 years in Nevada and I am looking forward to learning all about Texas! I received my bachelors degree from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2005 and have been teaching ever since.  I truly enjoy teaching the young learners in first grade and can't wait to get started.  I look forward to a great year in first grade.

Last Few Days of First Grade!

Dear Parents,
Wow! I can't believe this year is almost over.  It has been such a privilege to teach your children and I hope they have had a great first grade year!
This week we will be having several special things happening, the class is earning something different everyday.  Tomorrow, children can bring a stuffed animal to school to enjoy.  Today we drew and painted in watercolor!
On Friday, we will be signing year books, so please make sure to send those to school with your child.
Monday there is no school for Memorial Day.
Thursday the 31st is the last day of school.  Our class party will be from 11:30-12:30.  Please fill out the form sent home tonight to preregister to come to the party, it will make the day much smoother.  I will send out another post with the sign up genius link to volunteer to bring in a few items still needed for our party.  Dismissal is at 3:50, however you can sign your child out earlier right after the party to take them home with you.  Report cards will be sent home on the last day.
Thank you all so much for such a great year!!

Field Day

Your child will participate in field day this week. K-2nd grade will be on Thursday from 9:30-12:30, and 3rd -5th grade will be on Friday from 9:30-12:30. Please make sure that they wear the color that their teacher has given them, and tennis shoes. Field day attire must follow the school dress code. Kindergarten lunch on Thursday is from 10:30-11:00, 1st grade from 11:00-11:30, and 2nd grade is from 11:30-12:00. On Friday, Grades 3-5 will eat after the games at 12:30. If you did not order a box lunch for your student, please be sure to send your student with a sack lunch. On Friday the cafeteria will be closed, and will not be serving the regular menu to ANY grades. Only box lunches that were pre-ordered, will be served on Friday. Please pack a lunch on Friday as well, if you did not order a box lunch.

Please make sure that your student puts on sunscreen/bug spray before they come to school. Also, send them with a water bottle and towel for picnicking at lunch. We are hoping for beautiful weather, but you never know what could happen. Unless it is storming, we will plan to go on with the day. Thank you for allowing your child to participate. We are looking forward to 2 days full of fun!

Week of May 14th

Dear Families,
I hope everyone had a great Mother's Day weekend and got to enjoy some family time!
Thank you all so much for all the generous gifts last week.  It was very heartwarming to receive so many special things from all of you, and it is very much appreciated!
We had a great time at TGR Exotics last week - thank you so much for having your kiddos prepared for the field trip!
This week we have STAAR testing for 3rd-5th grades on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday so the campus will be closed to all visitors.
On Thursday the 17th first grade will have our Field Day in the morning.  The coaches have asked that all first graders wear yellow! Unless you signed up to get a bag lunch from the cafeteria you will need to pack a lunch for your child that day! Also, Friday is field day for upper grades so the cafeteria will again be closed, so unless you signed up to get a bag lunch already, your child will need a lunch from home on this day as well.
I believe that parent volunteers are still needed if you are interested!
Please send all library books back (and any book bag books you might find that got left at home).  All books have to be inventoried. Please have the kids continue to read nightly with either books from home or RAZ Kids for nightly reading.
This week we are learning...
In reading, writing, and science we will be researching endangered animals and gathering information to put into a report.  I will have a page on my website with links for research the students will be using at school, they are welcome to do more research at home if they would like.
For word study we will have our last spelling test on a review of all inflectional endings: s, es, ing, and ed.
In math we will finish our unit on money and financial literacy.  We will be taking our unit test on Friday.  Please keep a look out for math pages to come home for review.
I hope everyone has a great week, please let me know if you have any questions!

Field Trip Reminder

Hi Parents,
Tomorrow is the day! Remember to send your child with a lunch from home tomorrow.  They will not be able to get lunch from school.  Remember to put their lunch in a gallon ziploc bag, NO LUNCH BOXES.  Also, please send 2 disposable water bottles.  Please put on sunblock and bug spray at home.  Remember to wear a Creekside Forest shirt if you have one, tennis shoes, and a hat.  It should be a great time!

Week of May 7th

Dear Families,
Thursday is our field trip to TGR Exotics.  Here are a couple of reminders about this day...
- ALL Students must bring a lunch from home on this day.  Please send their lunch in a gallon ziploc bag (or some other disposable bag that can be thrown away) with their name on it.  We are also requesting that they bring 2 disposable water bottles, one for lunch and one for when we are walking around the facility.  Their aren't drinking fountains and with the hot weather we want to make sure everyone is staying hydrated.  We will have coolers to keep all the food cold until lunch, so you don't have to worry about sending ice in the lunches, please have everything be disposable.
- Please have children dress appropriately for being outside, walking, and in the heat.  Tennis shoes would be the most appropriate foot wear.  Also we encourage hats, sunscreen, and bug spray.  Sunscreen and bug spray must be put on at home, students cannot bring it and apply it at school.
- We will have regular school hours on this day.  Students will come at normal time in the morning, buses will leave at 9:00 to go to TGR and then we will be returning to school at around 1:00.  We will have our normal afternoon and students will go home at the regular time, 3:50.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about the field trip.
For the rest of the week...
In reading, writing, and science students will start their research for our project on an endangered animal.  They will be reading books and watching videos to learn about these animals and why they are endangered.
For word study we will be learning to add the -ed suffix to verbs to change them into past tense.
In math we will be wrapping up our unit on financial literacy and learning about income and expenses, wants versus needs, and spending and saving money.
For social studies we will be learning about different kinds of land forms and how they look.

I hope everyone has a great week!

Math Homework Tonight

Hi Parents,
I wanted to let you know that I sent home a math page tonight for homework.  It is on counting groups of coins. We have spent a lot of time in class this week working on this skill and it would be great if they could practice some more at home.  I let the class know that it is not required, however if they bring it back tomorrow they will get 5 fuzzies!!
Thank you for your continued support!

Dear Families,

Students in grades 3, 4, and 5, will have an opportunity to show all that they’ve learned this year as they take a variety of STAAR tests.

May 14th, 2018:  3rd, 4th Math, 5th retest

May 15th, 2018: 3rd, 4th Reading

May 16th, 2018: 5th Science STAAR

Due to the security of this testing process, all parents (Kinder through 5th grade), will eat lunch with their children on other dates. Volunteers are also asked to reschedule their time. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter. Here at Creekside Forest, we have the most amazing parents who provide their time and care to volunteer and make our school a nurturing environment.

Thank you,

Creekside Forest Staff

Week of April 30th

Dear Families,
This week we will be working on finishing up our timelines.  Thanks for sending in those pictures last week!
In reading we will be reading poetry and thinking about thoughts and feelings being described by the author.
We will also be writing our own cinquain poems.
For word study we will be working on the inflectional ending _ing that puts verbs into the present progressive tense.
In math we will continue to learn about coins and counting and comparing values of a group of coins.
In social studies we will be learning about the different types of land forms.
I hope everyone has a great week!

Hi Families,
I forgot to mention two things in my weekly update.  The first is that students will need their three pictures of themselves for their timeline by tomorrow.  Thank you to those of you who have already sent them in.  If not, please send in a baby pictures, a toddler picture, and a current picture of your child.  They will be using these for a project so please only send pictures that you do NOT need back or a copy of the pictures.  They do not have to be full page size, 5x7 or smaller is big enough.
The second thing I wanted to let you know about is that I will be sending home 2 pages from the math book to help review for our test tomorrow.  If your child brings them back completed tomorrow they will earn 2 fuzzies.
Thank you for all your support!!

Week of April 23rd

Dear Families,
Thank you so much for coming to our first grade music performance last week! Everyone did a great job and I'm very proud of our class!
This week is our Scholastic Book Fair.  Tuesday morning starting at 7:30 is Muffins with Moms.  This is a great opportunity to get some books for summer reading.
This week...
In reading, writing, and social studies we will be studying timelines.  For reading we will be focusing on comprehension and understanding sequence of events.  In social studies we will learning about events in the history of Texas.  For writing, students will be working on using verb tenses correctly to write about past, present, and future events.
For word study this week the words will include plural nouns with the inflectional ending -es.  Students will be working with nouns that end with a hissing sound like, s, ch, sh, x, and z where -es needs to be added to make it plural.
In math this week we are going to review geometry and fraction on Monday and take our unit test on Tuesday.  For the rest of the week we will be starting a unit on financial literacy and begin by focusing on the value of coins.
We will continue to study the function of plant parts in science and understanding the life cycle of plants.  We will take our unit test on plants Thursday.
I hope everyone has a great week!
